The Transylvania Travel Company

Who we are:

Hi. I'm Jason, the American owner and operator of The Transylvanian Travel Company. When not giving tours in Romania, I study for a PhD in European History at Yale University. My wife, Adela, accompanies me on the tours and acts as co-guide and translator. She is a native Romanian from Timisoara and schooled as an artist. We both are excited to welcome travelers to Transylvania and to offer the most customized tours of historic Romania.

The Transylvania Travel Company specializes in flexible itineraries rich in historical detail, cultural interaction, and off-the-beaten-path locations. We are not a large corporation, and our tours do not involve herding busloads of tourists from one “post-card” sight to the next; such an alienating experience is not what travel is about—especially in a place like Transylvania. If you want to experience the REAL Transylvania, you need to leave the crowds behind.

We are committed to providing a rewarding travel experience, one catered to the particular interests of the individuals and families which choose our service—that is, those travelers looking to avail themselves of the benefits of having local guides who are familiar with the places, the history, and the tourist infrastructure.  In order

to make such flexibility practicable, we limit our tours to six persons.  This small group travels in a spacious, fully air-conditioned van, complete with several 12V power outlets in the passenger compartment for those with laptops or other portable electronic devices.  Unlike those on large tours who routinely stay in the Communist-era high-rise hotels which unfortunately blemish many Romanian cities, our clients are accommodated in smaller, private hotels and family-run pensions whenever possible.  Our tours are designed for all independent-minded travelers, but are particularly suited for those photographers—both amateur and professional—who seek the advantages of a flexible schedule (who wants to be rushed onto a bus just as you’re taking that priceless shot?) and the local experience of guides who are themselves avid photographers and who know that sometimes the best camera angles are from locations other than the parking lot.

If you are interested in visiting Transylvania (and I suspect you are!), and if you want the ease and security of a guided tour while still having control over WHERE you go, WHAT you see, and WHEN you see it, please give me a call or email me to discuss your customized travel itinerary.
