The
Historical Dracula: In the footsteps of Vlad Tepes |
|
| Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” was based upon the life
of a real 15th-century Romanian ruler, Vlad Dracula.
His name—“Dracula”—derives from the Order of the Dragon, a medieval
association of knights into which his father, Vlad Dracul, had been inducted.
Vlad Dracula is notorious in Romanian history for his ruthlessness
against his Turkish enemies and his cruelty against his own subjects. Indeed, he has come to be remembered in history
as Vlad Ţepeş (Romanian for “Vlad the Impaler”) , a name which
clearly indicates his favorite method of execution: impalement upon a stake.
